About fourteen kilometres away from Bandarawela is two architectural marvels of the day, the picturesque Demodara Railway Station and the spectacular Nine Arch Bridge.

Built in the early 20th Century by the British, the Demodara Railway Station, situated on top of a hill, is one of the most beautiful stations in Sri Lanka. However, it is the architecture of the Demodara Railway Station that makes it such a popular choice when sightseeing in Ella Sri Lanka. This architectural wonder has a tunnel that runs under the mountain! The track, which eventually emerges from the No. 41 tunnel, is called ‘The Demodara Loop’ and is about 900 meters long.

A few minutes’ walk from the railway station will take you to the magnificent Demodara Nine Arch Bridge. This massive viaduct built between the Demodara and Ella railway stations during the times of the British, was considered to be the longest viaduct in the East at the time of construction.

Giving you a splendid view of nine skies from underneath, the bridge is called the ‘Ahas Namaye Palama” (Sinhala: Nine skies bridge) as well as ‘The Bridge in the Sky’ due to its staggering height of 99.6 feet. Almost a century old since its commission in 1921, the mighty Demodara Nine Arch Bridge stands tall and proud built completely out of solid rocks, bricks and cement; a true marvel of the 20th century.
